We are finding more and more students suffering from anxiety, stress and depression. While there appear to be myriad causes, few of the bigger schools have the flexibility to create the type of community that can help students be more resilient.

When teachers are also the leaders of a school, policy and decision-making benefit from a balanced perspective of the classroom, the individual students and the culture of the community that come from the teachers' collective, direct experience with the daily workings of the school.

Knowing that small schools create less anxiety for teens, we create a community atmosphere that is responsive to their needs.

Students flourish in what a small learning community offers: low student/teacher ratio, strong connections with teachers and course work, and rigorous education that emphasizes experience over rote learning. Our small class size combined with experienced educators meet our students’ needs for challenge with support.

Teacher-powered

By combining the teachers' roles with administrative programming, the decisions and design that go into creating the school culture are put into the hands of those who know the students best. The leadership team at The Lotus School has worked together to create a learning experience that can be tailored to fit all types of students.

Mindfulness

Being present and aware of oneself and one's surroundings help an individual to remain calm and see one's mind clearly. With mindfulness an integral part of our school culture, students are able to set aside distractions and make room for true learning.

Small School

When students are connected to a close-knit group of peers and adults, they feel cared-for, heard, and safe. In this type of supportive environment, students are willing to take ownership of their learning and to be pushed to grow to their potential.

Student-Centered

Authentic learning comes from curiosity combined with experience. By creating classes that give students greater autonomy in the classroom, our teachers become facilitators who foster the development of the problem-solving and critical-thinking skills necessary to become contributing members of society.

I learned everything from languages to critical thinking to physics and chemistry. My passion in science and math was nurtured and it put me on a path leading to college for chemical engineering.
