October in Review

What a wonderful month it has been! We have enjoyed seeing the fall colors brighten our trees and have opened doors and windows to allow the cool air into the building. We have had a robust month of workshops, field trips, service trips and classwork. Some of the highlights you can find when scrolling through. We also have some events coming up, so check those out too!

What's going on in classes?

In Physics class, each student made a self-propelled vehicle using rubber band winding propulsion and basic materials like wooden sticks, cardboard, and paper. It showed the students rotational motion and torsion, and foundational engineering skills.
The Art class with John Muraco has incorporated a building project into the class schedule, where students are learning how to outfit a tiny house structure with some new framing. Skilled woodworker Todd is showing Adam saw safety and measuring below, in preparation for cutting the pieces for the frame.

Won Institute Workshop

Education researchers from the Won Institute of Graduate Studies, located in Glenside, PA, are conducting semester long workshops here at The Lotus School. During one workshop exercise, students built a paper boat from a template and decorated it to represent their personality. The activity is meant to be about keeping perspective about emotions.
According to educator Grace Song,

"We may not be able to control everything outside of the boat. BUT! if you realize that you can navigate your own boat by grabbing on to the steering wheel then you become the navigator or your life boat. It is in your hands. However, as we navigate our ‘life boat’, there may be times when we encounter difficult emotions. Up until now, you may have believed that difficult emotions were beyond your control, but we’re going to learn that ACTUALLY, it’s in our hands. We will gain the ability to manage our emotions."
